No matter where you live, your home could be vulnerable to a rodent infestation. A small colony of six mice can expand to 60 mice in three months.
Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to deter mice from entering your home. For example, by eliminating food and water sources and cleaning up clutter, mice won’t have a reason to stay in your home.
But how do you know if you already have a mouse problem?

1. Rodent Spotting
First, and most obviously, if you see a rodent in your home, it’s likely that there are others hidden behind the walls, under cabinets, or in your crawlspace. Don’t assume that a single mouse spotting is irrelevant.
As noted above, mice produce incredibly quickly. If you see a mouse and don’t take immediate action, you could have a full-blown mouse infestation on your hands in the near future. And unfortunately, the more mice are allowed to take refuge in your home, the harder it will be to eliminate your problem.
2. Chew Marks and Other Signs of Destruction
Not all homeowners will spot a rodent infestation by coming across a mouse or rat in their homes. However, rodents leave signs of their presence everywhere they go, especially if they’re nesting somewhere on the premises.
Look for scratch marks and chew marks on your walls, on storage boxes, on furniture, etc. If the rodent infestation is nesting in a storage area, they will go after all of your materials to help build their nest. This includes clothing, photo albums, and other important documents.
3. Rodent Noises
It might be time to call rodent control if you’re hearing mice, even if you can’t see them. If the mice are inside your walls, you’ll hear noises as they’re scratching and chewing drywall and other materials.
In some cases, you’ll hear rodents scampering across the floor, whether it’s in your house, in your garage, or in your attic. If they’re clambering over boxes or other stacks of possessions, you’ll hear them moving about, though you’ll rarely see them.
4. Signs and Odors of Rodent Waste
Finally, preventing a rat infestation or mouse infestation before it gets to the point that you can smell their waste is imperative. If you can small their waste, it means there’s a lot of it. Furthermore, there are serious rodent infestation health risks associated with their urine and fecal matter.
The Hantavirus can be spread through the air when rodent waste is disturbed. If you or any members of your family breathe in these toxins, it can lead to extreme side effects, and maybe even death. If you see or smell rat droppings, call rodent infestation control immediately, and don’t try to clean up the mess yourself.
